About The Club

About The Club The Vulcan 558 Club, now the Vulcan to The Sky Club, was launched in May 1997 in response to the public's continuing interest in the ongoing activities and future preservation status of what was the RAF's last flying Avro Vulcan, XH558, at its home at Bruntingthorpe Airfield near Lutterworth in South Leicestershire.

Since 1997 the Club and its members have worked hard to help promote the preservation status of XH558 during its years as an exhibition and ground-running 'aircraft' as part of the British Aviation Heritage collection.

Since 1999 the Club has been actively supporting the XH558 Return to Flight project by way of its continual promotion of the aircraft at air shows and other public events. This support has been reinforced by the Club's fundraising efforts in support of, firstly the Vulcan Operating Company (VOC), and, then latterly the Vulcan to the Sky (VTTS) campaign.

In year 2000 the Club formally registered this support to the Project by registering itself as a VOC Founding Sponsor. The Club has not only honoured its Founding Sponsor pledge of £25,000 but has increased its direct cash donation to the project by another £7,250 thanks to a second successful Grand Draw, and continues these fund raising support activities.

The Club also arranges for members to meet together by holding Social events at venues which include Bruntingthorpe airfield, and also organises member's visits to other aviation facilities and institutions.

Re-Heats on a Vulcan    (With 43 Replies)

Eh up! Stupid question time again! What is the technical difference between the type of engine residing in XH558 and an engine with reheat? Also is this also refered to as an 'afterburner'? or is that another type? Next, why would the engines have never been upgraded for the Vulcan's? Was it purely money, or is it an airframe-stress problem? Cheers in advance!

Picture caption game    (With 1166 Replies)

A picture caption game.. It seems that most here have a sense of humour (warped or otherwise) . The idea is that an aviation picture is posted or linked to by one individual. It runs for 24hrs, in which time other forumees/ites post a witty caption for that picture. After 48hrs - the poster of the picture chooses the winner and announces it. The winner then gets to post a picture and gets replies to that. It becomes a continious thread in time. Thoughts please.
End of Season Forum Party    (With 55 Replies)

Us girlies have been chatting and we thought it would be good to have an end of season get together somewhere, somehow. Any ideas? We also thought it would nice to do something special for the children (the real ones Bubbs!) on the day. Also perhaps a fundraiser? Kids could do a sponsored tractor pull! Of course it would also give us an opportunity to say goodbye to Rusty. Let us know what you think and perhaps those of us who are at AGM tomorrow could put our heads together as well.
Forum Story proposal ?    (With 191 Replies)

Idea for a new game.. Just add a one line sentence to the last one posted. It would be ongoing and fun to see the diversity of the replies. Anyone up for it ? (names on a signed blank cheque please)
